Frequently Asked Questions
Practical answers for tow operators, roadside professionals and entrepreneurs considering mobile EV rescue charging equipment.
How do I buy an EVroadHERO unit?
Visit the Buy Direct page or call 203-710-9300. Shipping typically occurs within two weeks of receipt of order.
What is rescue charging versus convenience charging?
Rescue charging is like bringing a small amount of gasoline to a stranded vehicle—enough range to reach the nearest land-based charger. With EVroadHERO, adding approximately 5–10 miles generally takes about 20 minutes. Convenience charging brings a much larger charge to an EV so it does not need to visit a charging station.
Can I do convenience charging with this unit?
While technically possible, it is not practical for full or near-full charging. Convenience-charging equipment is substantially larger, more powerful and more expensive.
What is the process for an EV rescue charge?
- Add gasoline and press the electric-start button to enter standby mode.
- Start the inverter generator using the button or wireless remote; the EV charger powers up.
- Uncoil the cable and connect to the EV, using the supplied Tesla adapter when needed. When finished, stop the charge from the vehicle, turn off the generator, disconnect and recoil the cable.
Never unplug an EV while it is charging under load.
What if the Plug gets stuck in the EV?
If the charging plug remains locked to the vehicle after the charging session has ended and after the EVroadHERO unit is completely off, locate the vehicle’s manual plug-release strap or cable. It is typically inside the EV behind the area where the charging cable plugs in and may be behind an access panel. Before pulling the release, double-check that the EVroadHERO unit is off. Always follow the owner’s-manual instructions for the specific EV you are charging.
How much should I charge for a rescue?
Pricing depends on your location and the comparable cost of a short tow. One approach is a plug fee for showing up plus a charging-time fee. Operators must set pricing appropriate for their own market and costs.
How long does it take to add rescue range?
On average, approximately 5–10 miles of range can be added in about 20 minutes. Actual speed depends on the vehicle, battery state, temperature, terrain and other factors.
Can I use it to provide full charges?
Not practically. A full charge would take many hours. High-speed portable DC equipment is available elsewhere, but it is substantially larger and can cost up to $100,000 or more.
What if my roadside provider will not pay for a rescue charge?
Discuss the service with the provider. Some operators report billing it as a fuel service rather than a jump start.
What if the plug will not unlock from the vehicle?
First ensure the generator is off. Never disconnect under load. Many EVs have a manual-release cable behind an interior panel near the charging port; consult the vehicle instructions.
What is the warranty?
EVroadHERO includes a one-year warranty.
